We’ve completed Weeks 1–4 several times for both PreK and Kindergarten. Honestly, those first few weeks really helped me fall in love with the curriculum and gave me a solid understanding of how it works!

Initially, we struggled to fit school into our very busy weeks—until Dad suggested I start waking up with him. While it threw a major wrench into my sleep schedule, it’s actually worked really well. I now wake up with Dad around 6:30 most days, which gives me enough time to set up for Baby Blossom. Baby Root usually sleeps through our school time—or, if he’s awake, he enjoys some PBS (sometimes we can even find episodes on what Sister is learning about!) while we finish, just in time for breakfast and starting the day.

The B&R kinder curriculum has 4 subjects,
This is how we have broken it down:

  • Mondays Literature
Usually a book with associated journal questions, a copywork letter, narration based on the book, and some activity related to the book choice. We chose to supplement this with Treasure Hunt reading, mainly because Baby Blossom REALLY wants to be able to read.
  • Tuesdays  Art/Music and History of Myself
Over the course of a few weeks, we get to know an artist, a composer, and ourselves through art and music studies, small profiles, and journal questions. I really love that we focus on the techniques each of the artists uses, and learning about the creator as well.
  • Wednesdays Math
We supplement with Singapore Dimensions, which has been a gentle and fun introduction to math. We really wanted to make sure she has a solid foundation for math. [We will soon be adding a family Spanish curriculum I hope to slide in on this day as well, as soon as it arrives!]

  • Thursdays Science
We were put into contact with an alien friend who is doing a project on our solar system. Each week she reaches out to us with questions for us to research and help her with! It’s super fun and cute and I love how they integrate imagination with science.
  • Fridays Nature Studies
Small studies paired with readings from the Burgess Book of Animals, which follows Peter Cottontail on his journey to learn about himself and the animals which make up his community.
  • I am also adding an inclusive History Curriculum that we are excited about, it is designed as a one day a week program. We’ll likely fit it in around dinnertime. It’s story and activity based, and we’re looking forward to incorporating it.

Throughout the week, we try to connect subjects to everyday life. For example, after a science lesson on living vs. non-living things, we’ll notice examples of this throughout the week. We may also discuss themes from literature or nature studies, or play “I Spy” with letters and numbers. It’s been fun finding creative ways to weave learning into daily routines

Extracurriculars
Baby Blossom participates in a part-time nature school, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and Clover Kids (4-H). We also try to stay involved in local events. Baby Root doesn’t have the attention span yet to fully participate, but he enjoys joining in when he can, and he loves our field trips.

Looking Ahead – Week 5
I hope to bring a more organized approach to Week 5 and keep up with posting more consistently.
